This was the Luka Doncic that lifted the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA Finals — a 33-point triple-double with 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
He was brilliant — and it was not enough.
Boston has balance and on a night the 3s didn’t fall — 10-of-39 (35.6%) — they got to the rim, made big defensive plays when they had to and had Jrue Holiday step up with a team-high 36 points, plus 11 boards. He carried the team for stretches, and the Celtics defense is always there.
It's Game 3 of the 3034 NBA Finals on Sunday night in Boston. The Celtics are leading the Mavs, 1-0, in the best-of-seven series and are looking for another home win Sunday night. The Mavs will have superstar Luka Doncic in the starting lineup on Sunday despite the All-Star being listed as questionable earlier in the afternoon. Doncic is dealing with a chest contusion as well as knee and ankle injuries.
The Mavericks got down by as many as 39 points in the first half of Game 1 and hit just seven 3-pointers in the game. Kyrie Irving had 13 points and Doncic finished with just one assist. The Celtics, meanwhile, got double-figure scoring from six different players. That includes Kristaps Porzingis, who scored 30 points (18 in the first half) off the bench in his first game since returning from a calf injury.
What will happen in Game 3? Here's what you need to know for Sunday night.
The Celtics won Game 1 by 18 points, but the line only moved by half of a point. There are obvious reasons to expect some degree of regression in Game 3. The Celtics made nine more 3-pointers than the Mavericks in Game 1, for instance, and even if Boston is likely to win the 3-point battle in the series, a margin like that isn't sustainable. Dereck Lively II probably doesn't get into foul trouble quite so quickly. Kyrie Irving probably doesn't shoot 6 of 19. Lost in that logic is that the Celtics didn't exactly play a great game either. It might feel like they shot the lights out after making seven 3s in the first quarter, but they only hit 38.1% of their triples in the game, below their season average. Jayson Tatum barely scored. They missed free throws and didn't attack the rim nearly as much as they could have. Ultimately, for reasons we'll get into in later picks, the issues Boston posed for Dallas were bigger than just shooting variance. They are unsolvable schematic problems. The Celtics are at a major advantage here, and a seven-point line is warranted
The Boston Celtics have luxuries most teams don’t.
They can withstand a second consecutive off night shooting from Jayson Tatum, their first-team All-NBA forward, and one of the NBA’s best 3-point shooting teams can weather a terrible game from that range (35.6%).
Boston’s talented roster managed both issues for a 105-98 victory against the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night in Game 3 of the NBA Finals.
It helps to have Jrue Holiday, who had 36 points and 11 rebounds and three assists. It helps to have Kristaps Porzingis contribute 13 points and three blocks off the bench. Derrick White delivered 18 points, five assists, three steals and two blocks, and Jaylen Brown had 31 points, seven assists and three steals.
